Having a breast augmentation is a process. There are a lot of choices and steps to be done along the way. There are certain things that must be present prior to doing a breast augmentation.
It’s important that the woman is in good physical health, in good psychological health, emotionally stable, and that she is realistic concerning the outcome and the risks.
In addition it’s important that she have a good support person to help her recover from the surgical process. What is meant by a support person is family or a friend to help her before surgery and after surgery. Whoever is the support person needs to drive her to the surgery and pick her up after surgery. He/she should also be with her at least the first night after surgery.
Part of the process is that when the patient interested in breast augmentation talks with the surgeon she should be able to tell her story. Stories have a beginning, middle, and an end.
- Likewise her story will start with the current situation. What cup size is she? Has she always been like this? How have her breast changed over time?
- The next item is: what does she not like about her current breast situation? It is usually that the breasts are too small. Yet there may be other things that are present. She could have saggy breasts, uneven breasts or unusually shaped breasts. In addition is a good idea to understand her emotional reaction to the current breast situation.
- After the first two items, then the question is what do you want to achieve?
After this discussion with the surgeon, then a physical exam is usually done. Measurements are often taken. These numbers can serve as a valuable guide in the decision process.
The next step that takes place is usually choosing from amongst many options. Is the implant you want saline or is it silicone gel? Do you want a round implant or do you want an anatomical shaped implant? What size of an implant do you want? All these questions and others need to be decided.
There are often hurdles to overcome. The things you may need to deal with could be finding a support person, planning time off work, arranging for childcare, or figuring out how to finance the procedure. There are a lot of steps to be undertaken before the breast augmentation surgery.
The first step usually begins with a phone call to your friendly plastic surgeons office.
Please give me any feedback with things you don’t agree with or things that have not been discussed.
